What should you expect from a business coach?
So it's taken some soul-searching and late night head-scratching, but you've made a decision - to boost your business to new heights you need advice. And not from your friendly neighborhood barista - you want expert guidance from a seasoned business veteran who knows your industry and will send you back to the office with a set of specific action items and deadlines. Your expert will be calling in ten minutes - what should you expect in this first conversation?
To discuss the details of your business- If you've ever watched Shark Tank, you may have felt pity when the folks making their pitch didn't have every answer to every question instantly. Don't be them. Expect and be prepared to review planning, products and personnel, as well as customers, markets and your competition.
Honest opinions - A great business coach is only great because he or she has succeeded in business. However, don't expect to be comforted or coddled. You're paying for experience and direction, and anything else would be a waste of your time and money. If you sit down and spill everything that concerns you about your business, you should get back up with a specific to-do list, a deadline and the information to get it done.
Knowledge bombs - The true value of a business coach is often overlooked. They can be impartial because they are outsiders looking in at your organization. There are no favorite employees, no "we've always done it that way," and nothing is sacred. Many business owners I've spoken with are stunned (in a good way) by the results of their first meeting. Sometimes the view from 30,000 feet is surprisingly clear.
This is the first in a series on business coaching - a topic that I think is becoming more and more mainstream. There are coaches for virtually everything else in life and sometimes you just need a second opinion from someone who has walked in your shoes.
